Tara Earrings with Druks

I was getting frustrated being limited to just a few 2-Hole Cabochon colors that I like well enough to make these earrings. Also, the colors that I do like tend to be the most expensive ones. On a whim, I decided to see if the pattern would work using 6mm druks instead of the 2-Hole Cabochons that the pattern calls for. I have 6mm druks in a lot of pretty colors so I'm happy to say that they work great!

The only change you need to make is that you should go through the single holes in the druks whenever the pattern instructs you to go through either the inside or outside holes of the cabs. Once the initial ring of beads has been made, the rest of the beads will cover up anything that might give away that you swapped out the beads. You can't tell the difference in the finished product. Look at the earrings in the photo above and see if you can guess which ones have 2-hole cabs and which ones were made with druks. I didn't bother to put loops on most of them because they're just samples.

You can read about the other earring in the photo above that has 2-hole cabochons in THIS post.

  1. Love that these can be made with druks. I have lots of them in colors I love, but haven't been willing to buy the 2-hole cabochons in the colors that I love (which are also more expensive). Thank you so much for sharing these pattern tweaks with us. We really appreciate them. Claire

  2. I can't tell the difference. The cabs are very expensive as are all the newer beads. I just bought 10 gms... 3x8 O beads @ $8.65(pastel bourdeau). Too expensive but I needed them. :-)))))))

  3. Thanks Linda, this is exactly information we need. Some of these 'new' beads while nice are very frustrating for us beaders, as it entails purchasing new more pricey beads, while we still have loads of stash bead to utilize.
I do love some new bead designs, but oftentimes think, this idea of using new beads, drives the production and profits of the manufacturing sector, well as increases sales of the retailer. Likewise it's very frustrating,as it does not allow a quick visit to our own supplies. Thank you again and continue to offer us options to use in your lovely designs.

    1. I hope you don't mind that I deleted your other comment about "beavers", Elizabeth. I often make a similar typo when I'm posting stuff on my recipe website. I have a tendency to type "beads" instead of "beans".
