Taking a break...

I was going to do some beading today but I've decided to give up on beading until later in the fall when it's cooler. Beading when it's this hot takes all the fun out of it. We live in Texas and it's 95 degrees today and we have no air conditioning. Well, we do have air conditioning but as of last summer it no longer cools the parts of the house where we spend all of our time during the day, namely the living room and kitchen. It works fine in the bedrooms and bathrooms but no air conditioning comes out of the vents in the main parts of the house.

The landlord sent someone out to look at it three times last year but they can't find anything wrong with the system, which is only three or four years old. They even replaced all of the ducts in the attic last summer and it made no difference. This is a very small house and there is no place in any of the bedrooms to do my beading. We do have several fans in the living room but they're not enough to compensate for how hot it gets in here on sunny days. We keep the living room blinds closed during the day to keep it cooler in here so I have to use a lamp while I'm beading. Even with LED bulbs in the lamp, it still gives off a lot of heat. I really hate to give up my beading but I don't see any point in doing it if it's not enjoyable. I will try to squeeze in some beading time whenever we have a rainy or very cloudy day when it's not quite so hot.

  2. Oh, that's tough, especially when it is only June. I certainly hope your landlord can get things straight for you! Best wishes, Liz

    1. Thanks, Liz. In the past week or so it has started to be in the 90s pretty much every day and there is usually a spell in the summer when it gets over 100 to look forward to. I'm pretty much resigned to the fact that the landlord won't do anything to remedy the situation since nobody can figure out what is wrong. Until last summer the A/C would make it so cold in the kitchen and living room that we could hardly stand it. Now we get virtually nothing in those rooms. I might get in some beading time tomorrow. They're predicting storms all day and only a high of 81. 90's the rest of the week though.

  3. Enjoy your vacation from beading. But you still design in a journal in the meanwhile. I'm in Florida and it's hot too. Hope your best.

    1. Thanks, Merielen. It's not that I need a break from beading. I enjoy beading but not if I'm miserable while doing it. I may end up putting up with the misery because I'm already getting very bored. I have to keep busy creating things or I'll go crazy. I get antsy if I sit at my computer for too long but this is the coolest spot in the room. My computer is in the same room as where I do my beading.

  4. Right now I am sitting in my backyard in Toronto. And freezing. I wish I could send some of our cold to you and take your heat. I love heat! But I am sorry to hear how uncomfortable you must be. I actually can't imagine that heat. I hope you will find other ways to fulfill your creative urges. All the best. (Shiver, shiver) from Elizabeth. Go Raptors! Lol

  5. Oh how sad to hear! But like the earlier comments said, after all these years of consistent beading and updating this site, there's no shame in a bit of downtime, albeit forced downtime. I hope you enjoy your summer nonetheless, and who knows, maybe it'll give you lots of inspiration for new projects in the fall!
Even though I'll miss your regular updates over the summer, it's a nice opportunity to look back through your archives and relive some "forgotten" golden oldies!

    1. Hi Helen. The good news is that I just finished making the last of the Claudia bracelets and a pair of matching earrings. That's enough for today. It wasn't too terribly hot with three fans going. Anyway, I hope to take photos of them soon.

  6. Hi Linda. I enjoy your blog so much and always enjoy seeing your work. I'm just getting into beading and use only your patterns. You give clear directions and I love the colors you use. We keep our blinds and shades closed all day too and it's depressing but better than the awful heat. Thanks for sharing your talent with others.

    1. Thanks for understanding, Linda. Today wasn't nearly as bad as yesterday and we should get a nice break from the heat tomorrow due to thunderstorms all day, LOL. As long as the power stays on, and I can use my beading lamp, I may get in quite a bit of beading time.

  7. I'm in Mississippi, so I can certainly sympathize. I have lots to do to catch up to all your beading. I love your work. It's especially nice to read your comments on dealing with issues you have while doing a pattern. I tried to make the Peyote Fan Earrings BEFORE I read your tip on how to get around going through the 15s so many times. I broke a few and THEN I read your advice. Ha Ha. I will start over today using 4 lb fireline and I bought some size 12 needles last night. ;-) Thanks...try to keep cool. Bridget

    1. Thank you, Mary Jo. I'm starting to go a little stir-crazy. I need to create things or I find myself aimlessly wandering around the house doing stupid things like housework.
