Playing with my beads...Duo Fan Earrings

As I mentioned in THIS earlier post, I saw these in Beth Clark's ArtFire shop, HERE, while looking for another pair of her earrings that I'd seen on Pinterest. Aren't they adorable? They're very small and would be a great way to use up the last few SuperDuos when you don't have enough left to make a larger project. You only need twelve of them for a pair of these earrings. At the time that I found the photos, there was no tutorial for sale so I figured out the pattern on my own. However, Beth now has the pattern up for sale HERE and it's only $3.00.

UPDATE: Beth's "Duo Fan Earrings" pattern is now free. You can download the pattern on her blog, HERE.

I made sample earrings in a bunch of different colors and found that some seed beads and SuperDuos work better than others. I'm fussy about neat seed beads and some colors cooperated better than others. Miyuki "Light Bronze" is the clear winner when it comes to neatness and I used those in my favorite of the samples below. I found that matte SuperDuo beads work a little better than glossy, luster ones. Except for the one with the black seed beads, I like the rest well enough that I might make myself a pair of each.

  • 11/0 seed beads Miyuki "Light Bronze" (457L)
  • 8/0 seed beads Miyuki "Light Bronze" (457L)
  • SuperDuo beads "Gold Copper Iris Matte"

  • 11/0 seed beads Toho "Metallic Bronze Antique Gold" (225)
  • 8/0 seed beads Miyuki "Brown Bronze Matte" (457P)
  • SuperDuo beads "Olive Iris Matte"

  • 11/0 seed beads Toho "Hybrid Antiqued Metallic Black" (Y503)
  • 8/0 seed beads Toho "Hybrid Antiqued Metallic Black" (Y503)
  • SuperDuo beads "Ruby Red Wine"

  • 11/0 seed beads Miyuki "Dark Bronze" (457D)
  • 8/0 seed beads Miyuki "Dark Bronze" (457D)
  • SuperDuo beads "Ruby Red Wine"

  • 11/0 seed beads Miyuki "Dark Bronze" (457D)
  • 8/0 seed beads Miyuki "Dark Bronze" (457D)
  • SuperDuo beads "Purple Iris Matte"

  • 11/0 seed beads Miyuki "Metallic Chocolate" (461)
  • 8/0 seed beads "Metallic Chocolate" (no info available)
  • SuperDuo beads "Metallic Suede Blue"

  3. I love these earrings and your color choices really make them "pop"! I have tried making these myself and am having a really hard time. They always get too tight in one spot and too loose in another. Do you have any suggestions? Do you happen to have a blog about the tweaks you made to them? Thank you. P.S. LOVE YOUR WORK!!

    1. Hi Lisa. I'm not actually sure if I've tried Beth's version or not so I don't know if I make them differently than she does. Hers do look a little different on the sides. The seed beads on the sides of hers seem to curve inward and mine are more straight. If I have some free time, I'll give Beth's pattern a try and see what results I get compared to my version.

  4. It's o.k., I figured out what I did wrong, I was using Diamond Duos instead of Super Duos. Duh! When I did it with the correct beads, everything came out perfectly. I think the only difference that you made was adding the 8/0 at the top. Sorry to bother you and thank you so much for taking the time to help!

    1. I'm glad that you figured out what the problem was. DiamonDuos would be much too big to work. Have you seen the new Mini DiamonDuos? I just heard about them about a week ago and I have some samples to play with. They're about the same size as SuperDuos so they just might work with that pattern. The only place that I know of that has them is Queen City Bead on Etsy. I already dug out the pattern after reading your comment so maybe I'll give it a try with the minis and see what happens.

    2. Unfortunately, the Mini DiamonDuos don't work with this pattern. The shape is such that they won't curve in along the bottom row.

    1. When I click the link on Beth's blog where it says "The "Duo Fan Earrings" tutorial can be downloaded here.", it takes me to a PDF file which I think is on her Google Drive. There is a button at the top on the right to download the file to your computer.

    2. The "Duo Fan Earrings" pattern is not my pattern so it isn't posted here on my blog. You'll find a list of links to my free patterns on the right side of my blog where it says "FREE BEADING PATTERNS".
