Bracelet of the Day: Silver with a Marcasite Look

SILVER WITH A MARCASITE LOOK
  • 15/0 seed beads Miyuki "Olivine" (15-458)
  • 11/0 seed beads Miyuki "Olivine" (11-458)
  • 8/0 seed beads Miyuki "Olivine" (8-458)
  • 15/0 seed beads "Sand Luster" (no info available)
  • 6mm bicones "Light Smoked Topaz - #C29" (Beads One)

I'm always on the lookout for bracelet patterns that are unique and a bit out of the ordinary and this one caught my eye. For one thing, the bracelet is made of just seed beads of various sizes and there are no expensive crystals or specialty beads to buy unless you embellish it. IndulgedGirl is selling the ready-made bracelet HERE in her Etsy shop and she mentioned in the product description that she got the pattern from Deb Moffett-Hall.

I did a Google search for "Deb Moffett-Hall", which was the only clue I had to go on, and found her website but didn't have any luck finding the pattern there because I had no idea where to look and I didn't know what the pattern was called. I gave up looking and went ahead and worked out how to make it on my own. It was a little tricky figuring out how to start the squares, and then how to connect them as I made them without cutting the thread, but I eventually got it after a few experiments. I made several samples with different "metal" colors and accent colors. Here are a few color variations that I tried:

I made today's bracelet for Teejay's birthday, which was yesterday. Before posting it as my Bracelet of the Day, I thought I'd try once more to find the pattern online. So, I went back to Deb Moffett-Hall's website, found her contact information and sent her an email last night. She replied and, sure enough, the pattern IS there on her site and it comes with instructions for the bracelet and also the matching earrings. If you go to THIS page and scroll about halfway down, you'll find it. It's called "Silver with a Marcasite Look". The pattern is $7.95 and Deb will mail the printed pattern to you.

UPDATE 4/28/17: Deb has updated her website and patterns. This pattern is now called "Marcasite Square Bracelet & Earrings" and you can buy the pattern HERE for $5.00.

After making Teejay's bracelet, I decided that I'd like to embellish it even more so I added a 6mm bicone in the center of each little square. I love how it turned out and I agree with Teejay that the bracelet has the look of being really old. I think that's because of the metallic "Olivine" seed beads that I used. They seem to give beadwork an "antique" appearance.

Of course I wanted to make some earrings with these cute little squares but I wasn't thrilled with the ones that IndulgedGirl had made. For one thing, I wanted the squares to hang diagonally so that they looked like diamonds rather than squares. That was easy enough to do but, as I usually do, I ended up embellishing them. Here's a pair that I made for another friend's birthday:

  • 15/0 seed beads Miyuki "Antique Silver-Nickel" (15-464A)
  • 11/0 seed beads Miyuki "Antique Silver-Nickel" (11-464A)
  • 8/0 seed beads Miyuki "Antique Silver-Nickel" (8-464A)
  • 15/0 seed beads Toho "Silver-Lined Amethyst" (TR-15-26C/c)

  1. What can I say? Another fantastic creation! Your versions always come out looking so much prettier than the originals! I think the bicones are a beautiiful touch. Well done, Linda!

  2. Hi Linda :) Just fantastic! ..Often using simple beads creates a much more beautiful bracelet than a ton of mixed up bling. The way you come up with your colors makes your jewelry look like very fine metal vintage jewelry from expensive shops :) I have spent a good part of the day looking online at tutorials using some of the "newer" czech beads. It seems that everyday a "New" bead comes out....I found a free tutorial that I immediately thought of you using O-beads and pinch beads with superduos. I then spent several hours searching the best places to save some money on the new beads...LOL Right now fusion has a sale for 20% of using the code: HAPPY4TH my bday is in a couple of weeks...Like I need to spend any more money on beads! Thanks again for all your inspiration....

    1. I haven't ordered the pattern, Jeanie, because I figured out how to make it without one. I have no idea if my method is the same as Deb's but I suspect that it's very similar to hers.

    2. Hi Linda, will you make your pattern available? I have gone on the website and it is no longer there. She has a sale three patterns for 16 bucks and the bracelet is featured there but I cannot find it. Help, I love your bracelet!

  5. Hi Basia. Make sure that you use high quality Japanese seed beads for this. I recommend Miyuki beads because the size and shape are more uniform than Toho and other brands.
